Don't underestimate the importance of self-control (two aspects of self-control).  When you lose your self-control, you're harming others and you're harming yourself.  You're creating a great mess that, then, you have to clean up with My help.  But the other side of that is, 'Why is self-control so important?'  It's because when you maintain self-control in a situation that is rather challenging, you are a witness to others of love, kindness.  You offer mercy to others.  You are in the position of channeling Who I Am to others when you remain in self-control.  It is an example of Who I Am to the world.
